Yet another AXGT emerges

Sun Jul 27, 2014 6:45 pm

Hi, just bought a very sad looking AXGT on a J plate - Here it is arriving at the storage I rent:

Image

It's been off the road for at least 9 years that I know of, so will need complete recommissioning, along with welding to the sills, boot floor, driver's side rear wing and driver's side front inner wing (that I know of). There'll also be some rusty brake pipes to replace and who knows what else.

The good news is that the engine has run recently (although I'll change the cam belt before I do so), it's complete (albiet with some of the body kit removed to inspect the sills etc. for rust), and apart from some material coming unstuck from the door cards the interior is just missing the radio to make it complete and good.

I tend to like cars that are both rare and down on their luck, and this has been in the yard of my local Citroen indy specialist for years - he bought it for the air con, to transfer it to another GT he had, but sold the other car first. That's right, I said air con! The story I was told is that it was one of a batch of cars built for Australia that for some reson ended up here instead, although I don't know how true that is. I'll be back down the barn later in the week so will take some more pics then.

I would love to know if anyone know anything about this story, or if there's any other cars of similar spec out there.

Oh, and with the possible exception of the cat, I aim to keep this one original.

Welcome, can't wait to see more pics'. Air con would be ace in my ax, especially with the weather we're having at the moment.

Thanks guys. I shan't be starting it immediately as I'm in the middle of restoring a Visa 17D Leader and my 'other' daily driver, a Mk1 BX Estate is need of major work for the MOT. The plan is to have a good poke round then see what panels I can find before I end up making my own.

Aircon!!!! I knew that auzzys had it so I guess that looks like the reason! Great find tho. As you're into your older citroens I've just bought a little 104 and am on the lookout for parts. Mainly alloys and the what ever else is about!!
Welcome to the club :)

I think I may have seen you on the Visa Freeforum? The 104 has to be about as rare as the LNA. A neighbour of ours had one in the late 80's / early 90's, and they were a nightmare for parts back then! I seem to remember when they had to rebuild the brakes they ended up going to the local Citroen dealer for the front parts, and finding one of the last remaining Talbot dealers for the rear cylinders as the Peugeot dealer had nothing.

Here's a couple more pics, as requested:

Image
Bonnet is from a later car, so a correct one is on the wanted list.

Image
Under the bonnet, you can see some of the extra pipework and the heat exchanger for the air con - it's virtually the same size as the rad it sits in front of. Can't remember the date of registration but the RP No. shows it was built in January 91 so had to be hanging around a few months at least to end up on a J plate.

Image
Back wing is rotten, both round the filler and along the bottom edge. Haven't taken a pic yet, but the sill this side has gone all along the bottom and at the base of the B post.

Image
The aircon controls and vents inside the car. Dunno if it's conected to the rest of the ventilation system at all - I guess I'll find out when I get it going.

Didn't know that - I think I read somewhere that it was the first injection set used on this model, and from the specs I found I imagine many have been dumped for other set ups to get more power. So long as it works, I'll keep it - The power to weight ratio is probably greater than anything else I've owned!

Hmm, single point gt5 with aircon....could this be one of the rarest cars in the club....?

I'm assuming (and hope) that an OEM spec resto is going to be all that is done to this....and no mods?

The only mod I may make is a different exhaust in order to get rid of the cat, but that's it. I tend to like my cars rare, standard and useable. They're usually a bit cosmetically challenged but mechanically good.

Even with the poor state of the sills, This is actually pretty good for one of my cars!

the great things about AXs is you can fill them full of common as muck parts and servicing/acquiring bits is dead easy then. the mk1 GT stuff is probably getting a bit thin on the ground ... but theres tonnes of saxo bits thatll go straight on ... and nobody is any the wiser (unless you slam it on some 15" 4 stud wheels, that kinda gives the game away... to some)

any idea who this is? i spotted it just outside salmon springs, stroud

I think that's Brian King. He lives in Stroud and has a GTi 4x4, a Valver ad a TZD Turbo. I sometimes run into him at Tony Weston's place (not literally though!).

Ruffgeezer - I think I have all the kit, but haven't checked it's condition yet.

AllenSP - Full marks - that's my brother's '59 RHD Westy, which was on the road until it dropped a valve about 8 years ago. He was hoping to restore it, but Wife, Twins, and buying a business has got in the way of that so once I've managed to free off the rear drums (which have seized despite the brake being off!) it'll be up for sale. Proceeds will go to (among other things) getting his '68 Karmann Beetle Cabrio back on the road to serve as a 2nd car.
